Effect of hydralazine on the fetus in the treatment of maternal pregnancy induced hypertension

Abstract
The effect on the fetus of lowering the maternal blood pressure with intravenous hydralazine was studied in 37 patients with diastolic blood pressure of 110 mmHg or more. The desired effect was most always achieved with from 5 to 25 mg of hydralazine.
Two patients showed fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations coinciding with a fall in blood pressure. Thirty-five (94.6%) patients showed no fetal heart rate change after hydralazine administrations.
From these results, I conclude that the reduction in maternal arterial blood pressure with hydralazine is without apparent hazard to the mother as well as the fetus.
